About Us

Experimental

Orac is an electronic music label. We focus on experimental works which can also function on the dancefloor. The combination is a contradication we embrace wholeheartedly.

Electronic

Much of the music we appreciate has has a lineage which can be traced to composers such as Morton Subotnick and The Egyptian Lover who worked with analog electronic sound sources. But as analog electron-systems have been mostly superseded by digital electron-systems, so will today's electronic computers be replaced by photonic and biological systems. And will we still, then, call the resulting music electronic? It would cause us the greatest chagrin to look back on our music years from now and see that it was a product of an infatuation with a given era of technology. However, the term "electronic" is fairly useful in that is descriptive of a broad area of current human activity relating to what we do. Also, the movement and exchange of electrons is fundamental to all material processes including biological ones. Therefore it is accurate to state that we are, all of us, electronic.

Dance Music

The creation of musical tone-carriers is a process which requires precious time from the lives of unique human beings. We believe that this process is worth undertaking only if the resulting artifacts are a vital force in the culture. Though only hindsight can judge what holds up well, it is our goal to add to the pool of dance classics which remain listenable and funky regardless of the current sonic fashions. These classics are not merely "floor-fillers," but meaningful communications from one or more human creators. There are underlying issues which we expect will connect people to music in the 26th century in much the same way as today. These include physical and intellectual nourishment, territorial struggles and the pleasure of repetitive muscle movements, as well as the desire to transcend the human condition. If we want our music to endure, we must speak to these issues. Our mission is to support the creation of electronic dance music which can inspire people to consider both their places in this world, and the places between worlds.
