Bits For Sale
Myself, I’m still a vinyl buyer. I might start thinking about “going digital” if I had to carry crates of records around the world, but I’m really not DJing that much. And it’s always a pleasure to buy something I can hold, the paper and ink part especially, as opposed to disembodied information. Buying the right for trillions of magnetic poles on my disk drive to be oriented into a particular configuration representing certain sounds-- it’s a bit of a freaky concept for me! But it’s the way the world is going, apparently.
If you want to get your hands on Jon McMillion’s debut record “Inner Floor” stateside, you still have another week to wait. But you can get the MP3s from Kompakt right now. After I got comfortable with this release, I was definitely able to do some serious programming to it. I can definitely recommend it as a soundtrack to various work and leisure activities in addition to its main intended purpose as dance music. If I had an iPod, I would definitely want it on there, so I can see how the digital download might be a good thing!
There are a few other great releases from Orac friends and family fresh on the Kompakt MP3 site: Jerry’s new EP on Shitkatapult (under the “Jerry Abstract” name, yeah!), Dapayk’s Rrygular releases as his alter ego “Marek Bois,” and Paradroid’s answer to Richard Simmons, “Suggestive Workout Routines” on our sister label Adjunct.
Frankly, the Kompakt MP3 store is a bit vexing to use. But it has a unique and wonderful selection of music, so we’re prepared to overlook its foibles. To complain overmuch would be like harping on your friend who is always having the world’s greatest parties that, you know, he really needs to get the floor refinished before someone gets a splinter. Besides, If you work the little buttons right you can make your own mixes, or even play one track on top of itself! Fun for hours.
