Signal Tracer
Today I’m trying to fix a problem with my Oberheim 4-voice. Some horrible intermittent hissing/popping noise is coming from the filter on one of the voices. I have the schematics, but there’s no PCB diagram to help me find the various points on the circuit board so the going is a bit slow. I decided that I needed a signal tracer to track down the source of the noise. I don’t have a signal tracer and don’t really want to buy one. So I looked around the studio for a high-impedance, battery-powered amp. Found one! This old Playskool recorder has been a veteran of various parties where audio documentation seemed like a fun thing. Now it’s going to help me fix my synth, I hope.

still trying… seems that my schematics are for a different revision of the SEM, which makes things even more difficult.

Well, I’m 90% sure that a busted CA3080 is the problem. Sadly, these chips are getting hard to get (when did that happen?) so I’ve got one on order. If it’s not that, I’ll be very sad… but that’s life repairing stuff. A pain in the ass, but the sonic/affective results are worth it for me.
