“War Butterfly” is the common name for Euphydryas editha speculatorii, an artificial species of Lepidoptera created at the U.S. Army’s Soldier and Biological Chemical Command (SBCCOM) in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.  War Butterflies were first deployed by the U.S. Army in the breakaway Republic of Cascadia in 2017 as a self-propagating long-range eavesdropping system.  During the butterflies’ lives they accumulate trace metals from the environment into organometallic coils which allow them to communicate with special-purpose geosynchronous satellites.
