Fog, But No Shipwreck
Ouch, I woke up still a bit drunk this morning after celebrating the Return of Bruno. But I’m not effed up too badly. I seem to remember getting up around four in the morning and fixing some “Lolo” brand instant wheat noodles with an egg stirred in, which helped me maintain my course some ways off misery’s starboard bow.
Later on, the first thing I did after making coffee was to put on “Heroes”. Though it’s been etched in my brain since my teenage years, I haven’t given this album a good listen in a while. It’s still great. The first side might seem a bit raucous for a hung-over state, but its glammy throb is really a good way to start any day, gets the blood moving it does, after which the wide open spaces of the second side are like a nice rubdown.
My listening experience this morning is making me glad that we decided to put out Supernature (ORAC20) as a single LP. The current convention in the dance music world would be to make it a 2x12 (at least), with the grooves as hot as possible. But you know what? This is a record that tells a story-- I want to put it on and listen. Twenty-odd minutes, pause for consideration or at the very least “hey the music stopped”, then the handling of the record, a brief but mandatory exercise of the feet and fingers, twenty more minutes, end. It’s a time-honored formal structure which still has life in it.
